Reaction to United win at West Brom

Manchester United held off a late revival from West Bromwich Albion to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory at The Hawthorns on Sunday.  
Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard in the first half gave the Reds a two-goal lead which proved decisive and, despite a late strike from Gareth Barry for the Baggies, Jose Mourinho’s men went on to secure three vital points.

Jose Mourinho: “With a 2-1 result we managed to have the ball, bring the ball forward, hide the ball and not suffer a lot in the last minutes, especially going into five minutes of extra time, not four. We didn’t have problems.”
Ander Herrera: “We should have controlled more of the game in the second half because we played one of our best first halves of the season. We didn’t let them create chances against us which is difficult here because they have quality players. So, we were very happy at half-time but now we have to think about improving things, because in the second half, they controlled the ball and we suffered a little bit. We can be happy but there are things to improve.”
Jesse Lingard: “Lukaku’s goal was similar to the goal he scored against Bournemouth, he’s got great movement in the box and will score goals all day long. The 12th man, the fans, are always behind us and always back us whether we win, lose or draw. It was great to have them there on days like today.”
MUTV pundit Paddy Crerand: “You talk about a game of two halves. United were so comfortable in the first half. In the second they were a totally different team. West Brom took the game to United and caused lots of problems for us. It could have and should have been over at half-time. But that’s what happens, you’re winning comfortably and then they came out in the second half and West Brom had a go and made it difficult, but United hung on.”
View from the hosts – West Brom manager Alan Pardew: “I made a mistake with the team, I wanted to show faith after the game at Liverpool but should have brought fresher legs in. I have to accept blame. Lessons learned for myself and the team today.”
