Rivers State is not Lagos or Kano where past governors continue to govern by proxy and get away with it. The nation cannot afford that undemocratic luxury destroy where the chicken that lays its golden egg live.
That is why the radars at the Villa instantly received the protest message, which unfortunately had to be dispatched through an effective courier of economic sabotage. It was timely acted upon by dusting the Constitution—for the first time in many years there 😀—and activating its provisions for state of emergency.
Continued political dialogue between the parties would have reversed the fortunes of the country. Thus, the President was pragmatic and right yesterday evening to declare a state of emergency.
He was, however, wrong and complicit all along for not checking the ambitions of Wike, which he must do now before the nation slips into bankruptcy. Wike, to be frank, has harvested bumperly from his 2023 election investment. He must not continue to test his luck any further.
After the state of emergency, Fabura must return to his seat while the Villa ensures that Wike through the State Assembly does not continue to commit himself to any political brigandage. Wike must toe the line of previous governors of the priceless Rivers State. A sitting Governor with its money cannot foolishly be a lackey of even his benefactor.
The country has bent over backward for decades to comfort Rivers in the past two decades. The dangerous ambition of Wike to become its landlord for life should not destroy those efforts. The President must stop him—now.
