Anthony Joshua Breaks Down Carlos Takam

Anthony Joshua retained his WBA ‘super’ and IBF heavyweight titles with a 10th-round stoppage win over Carlos Takam after a brutal battle in Cardiff.

The unbeaten 28-year-old suffered a suspected broken nose after a head clash in the second round, but gradually broke down the brave resistance of Takam to bring up his 20th straight knockout win.
Joshua’s preparations were disrupted last week, with Takam replacing the injured Kubrat Pulev, and the France-based Cameroonian displayed his renowned durability as he dragged Britain’s star boxer into a damaging dogfight.
The flaming letters ‘AJ’ signalled the arrival of Joshua, who resisted the desire to make a blazing start to his latest title defence, deciding instead to test out his heavy artillery in the first round.

Joshua edged menacingly forward in the opener, pumping out a ramrod jab, and a few range-finding right hands sent Takam scuttling back towards the ropes.
Heads clashed nastily in the second round as the bullish Takam lunged forward recklessly to leave Joshua with a badly bloodied nose, although this stung the champion into action as he landed a cuffing left hook.

The sight of blood seemed to enliven Takam, who landed a left hand counter in the third, but Joshua would inflict a more serious injury on Takam in the fourth as a slashing right hook opened a cut over his right eye.
He was still blinking through a crimson cloud as Joshua dropped him with a left hand and there were concerned words from referee Phil Edwards in the corner before Takam opted to battle on.
Joshua worsened the wound with more thudding punches in the fifth, while a jolting uppercut had Takam on unsteady legs in the sixth, although he somehow remained on his feet and shared a defiant share with AJ.

Takam’s swollen face was a mask of blood and yet he still managed to stall Joshua’s march with two right hands in the seventh.
Joshua continued to chop away at Takam’s tree-like physique with booming body shots in the eighth, but the 36-year-old was not yet ready to topple as he hit back with hooks in the ninth.
But a savage encounter was ended in the 10th as Joshua staggered Takam with an uppercut and then a straight right hand prompted the swift intervention of Edwards, who mercifully waved off the fight.

Former GOP State Senate Candidate Accuses George H.W. Bush Of Groping Her

A former Republican candidate for Maine’s state Senate accused former President George H.W. Bush of groping her on Friday, becoming the fourth woman to come forward to accuse the former president of sexual harassment.
Amanda Staples visited the former president at his family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, during her campaign in 2006.
Staples said Bush grabbed her from behind during a photo op, and said, “Oh I’m not THAT President.”
The episode is similar to stories shared by three other women accusing the former president of sexual harassment.
Actress Heather Lind was the first to come forward, accusing Bush of touching her inappropriately from behind during a photo op.
New York actress Jordana Grolnick then shared her experience, followed by author Christina Baker Kline. Both women also said Bush touched them from behind during a photo.
Staples said she “couldn’t help but share” her experience in wake of the three other women coming forward, according to The New York Post.
Bush’s office released a statement in light of the allegations on Wednesday apologizing for the former president’s actions.
“At age 93, President Bush has been confined to a wheelchair for roughly five years, so his arm falls on the lower waist of people with whom he takes pictures,” the statement read.
“To try to put people at ease, the president routinely tells the same joke — and on occasion, he has patted women’s rears in what he intended to be a good-natured manner. Some have seen it as innocent; others clearly view it as inappropriate,” the statement from Bush spokesman Jim McGrath continued.
“To anyone he has offended, President Bush apologizes most sincerely,” he said.           (The Hill)

What An All-powerful Xi Jinping Means For the Rest Of The World

When US President Donald Trump visits China next month, he won’t be the most powerful person in the room.
Chinese President Xi Jinping further shored up his grip on power Wednesday, revealing a new leadership without an obvious successor and setting the stage for him to dominate politics in the country for decades to come.
That gives him a level of stability and influence the envy of most world leaders, sitting atop the world’s second-largest economy and one of its strongest militaries without any obvious challenger or check on his power.
Trump, Germany’s Angela Merkel and the UK’s Theresa May all face intense opposition at home, while even Russia’s Vladimir Putin cannot boast the stability and economic security Xi’s administration has.
Trump called Xi late Wednesday to congratulate the Chinese leader on a successful re-election, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Speaking to Fox Business after the call, Trump said “now some people might call (Xi) the King of China.”
In a highly choreographed ceremony in Beijing Wednesday, Xi said his leadership will be “steadfast in upholding our country’s sovereignty, security and development interests.”
The move caps a years-long effort by Xi to “make China great again,” said James McGregor, author of “No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism.”
“He has this narrative of ‘China was great, the foreigners ruined it, and the party has brought it back’.”

Political leadership

During this month’s Communist Party Congress, “Xi Jinping Thought” was enshrined in China’s constitution, an honor only granted to two other leaders: Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
In a speech during the political summit, held every five years, Xi heralded the start of a “new era” for the party and China, building on those overseen by Mao and Deng.
“Mao established the People’s Republic of China, Deng brought the country wealth and now Xi is going to bring power,” said Frank Ching, a Hong Kong-based commentator and expert on Chinese politics.
This has included a new assertiveness on the international stage, as evidenced by Xi’s ambitious economic and trade initiative — the One Belt, One Road plan — and his attempts, rhetorically at least, to take up the mantle of globalization and environmentalism.
McGregor told CNN that “given the chaos in Washington and also the dysfunction in Europe, the world is looking for leadership,” a vacuum Beijing is attempting to fill.
“(Xi) has exploited a strategic opportunity in Asia opened by the Obama administration’s caution and now the instability and disorder of the Trump administration,” according to a recent report by Australia’s Lowy Institute.
“Dressed up in the benign slogan of the ‘China Dream’, Xi’s strengthening of the party at home and his determination to press Beijing’s claim abroad has profound implications for China, its neighbors, and the rest of the world.”
Ching said that China is “now present all over the world, and as the US recedes, China is going to move in.”
Two new members of Xi’s cabinet, Li Zhanshu and Wang Huning, have strong foreign policy credentials in line with Xi’s desire for a more muscular overseas policy.
As his chief of staff, Li accompanied Xi on key overseas trips to the US and Russia, while Wang is a key architect of “neo-authoritarian” and “neo-conservative” policies which have shaped a focus on “nationalism and political order” under Xi, according to analyst Jude Blanchette.
A reshuffle of the 25 member Politburo, second only to the standing committee in terms of authority, also saw the promotion of the country’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, who has been a key player in crafting policy with regard to the US, India and other countries.

International assertiveness

Nowhere has Xi’s new bullish leadership been more obvious than in China’s foreign and military policy.
In the South China Sea Beijing has continued the building up and militarization of islands, reefs and islets in defiance of an international court ruling.
Despite repeated and vociferous objections from the US, UK, Philippines, Australia and other parties, China has stared them all down and largely won the argument — few claimants in the sea can challenge Beijing militarily, and while Washington has continued freedom of navigation exercises, the issue has not been a major one for the Trump administration.
“More than his predecessors, Xi has tried to leverage China’s diplomatic and military strength to press Beijing’s territorial claims in the East China and South China Seas, and lock in the country’s interests on its western flank,” the Lowy Institute report said.
On the chief point of contention between China and the US — North Korea — Beijing has also largely come out ahead, brushing off intense pressure from Washington to take a firmer hand on Pyongyang, though it has supported tighter sanctions and some limitations on North Korean businesses in China.
Tong Zhao, a fellow at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy in Beijing, said there has been speculation Xi “will have more bandwidth for addressing the North Korea threat after the Party Congress.”
He was skeptical of this however, saying the Trump administration’s policy of an immediate denuclearization of North Korea was “seen as a total illusion, completely unrealistic, and potentially dangerous in China.”
“Beijing’s overwhelming concern of the last few months has been to keep the US and North Korea quiet ahead of the Communist Party’s National Congress,” wrote analyst Adam Mount for CNN this week.
That task proved successful, leaving it less likely than ever China would bend to US pressure to take a firmer hand with its neighbor, potentially harming its own economy or destablizing a country of millions on its border.

Military might

As Xi has shored up his political power — overseeing an intense crackdown on dissent and critical voices — he has also ramped up his control of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Speaking on the 90th anniversary of the founding of PLA in August, Xi emphasized the party’s “absolute leadership” over the military, which he has pushed hard to modernize and which has been a major target of anti-corruption efforts.
In his speech, Xi emphasized the importance of the PLA’s combat readiness, saying that ongoing reforms of the army are key to ensuring its “readiness to defend state sovereignty and maritime interests.”
China has also improved military ties with Russia, staging a major joint naval drill near St Petersburg in August.
Russia is also a big player in China’s One Belt, One Road initiative, a series of trade and economic deals which stretch Chinese influence across Eurasia and much of Africa.
Both Europe and Africa have been targets of Chinese investments and aid — increasing economic ties with the European Union and funding major infrastructure projects across much of East Africa and other parts of the continent. Beijing is also poised to replace Washington as the major donor for much of the developing world.
However, Beijing’s posture, particularly its aggressive military and economic moves, could backfire, as previous world powers have discovered when they attempted to export their influence overseas.
While China has benefited from political instability in Europe and Trump’s “America First” policy, McGregor said the country “doesn’t have a lot of friends right now because there’s been so much of a strong stance.”
“Their (position) is for China to be strong and on its own, I don’t think they’ve looked at repercussions for the world and the way it’s making the world view China,” he added.

England Win Under-17 World Cup Final

England have won the Under-17 World Cup after coming back from 2-0 down in the final to beat Spain 5-2 in India.
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden scored twice in Kolkata, with the other goals coming from Rhian Brewster, with his eighth of the tournament, Morgan Gibbs White and Marc Guehi.

The Young Lions trailed Spain 2-0 after 31 minutes of the final in the sold-out Salt Lake Stadium, thanks to two goals from Barcelona’s Sergio Gomez.
Liverpool striker Brewster, the leading scorer in the tournament, brought it back to 2-1 before half-time, but few in the crowd expected what followed in the second half.

Wolves midfielder Gibbs White levelled matters just before the hour, then Foden put England ahead for the first time in the game with a close-range finish in the 69th minute.
The Spanish responded by throwing players forward, but fell further behind when a poorly-cleared corner was bundled home by Chelsea defender Guehi five minutes before the end of normal time.
Foden, who also won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament, added the fifth in the 88th minute with a rasping shot under the Spanish goalkeeper to send the whole England squad into an ecstatic, celebrating pile.

The victory is perfect revenge for Steve Cooper’s side, who lost 4-1 on penalties to the Spanish in the final of the Under-17 European Championship final this summer.
Nevertheless, the win completes a superb year for England’s junior sides.
The Under-20s won their World Cup, beating Venezuela 1-0 in the final in June, the Under-19s won their European Championship, while the Under-21s reached the semi-finals of their European Championship.
Attention will now turn to the senior side, who will attempt once again to end their long wait for a major tournament win in the World Cup in Russia next summer.

N2bn Fraud: Civil Service Commission Yet To Sack Fleeing Maina

Abdulrasheed Maina
                                    Abdulrasheed Maina
Four days after the order of President Muhammadu Buhari for the “immediate disengagement” of embattled ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, from the Federal Civil Service, the process leading to his disengagement is yet to commence.
Sunday PUNCH gathered in Abuja that as of the close of work on Friday, the Federal Civil Service Commission had yet to commence the process.
Findings revealed that the process for disengaging a civil servant from the system, as laid down in the rules and regulations of the service, would require strict adherence to civil service rules and procedures in order to avoid its nullification through the judicial process.
A serving director in one of the Federal Government ministries, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, explained that irrespective of the gravity of the offence, an accused person was entitled to an opportunity to defend himself or herself before further action could be taken.
He, however, added that in the event the person failed to honour the summons when opportunities were provided, a decision to discipline in accordance with the rules would apply.
The director stated, “It will require first that a query be issued to the person concerned; he can then be warned as the case may be and then a board/committee will be set up to investigate the matter.
“And in the course of its investigations, the board has powers, according to our rules, to summon the accused person to defend himself. It is after this procedure is carefully followed that further action can be taken.”
Commenting on the Presidential order, he said, “Yes, the President has spoken. My understanding of what he said is that the civil service commission, which has the statutory duty of hiring and firing, should commence the procedure of ensuring that this happens.
“Mr. President that I know is a man that follows procedure; that is why some of his actions are being misinterpreted to mean he is slow.”
When contacted on whether or not the process had commenced, the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Dr. Joel Oruche, said he was not in a position to speak on the matter because he had no information on it.
“I don’t have any information on that (whether Maina has been disengaged from service). I don’t have any information to give you. No comment,” he told SUNDAY PUNCH.
A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Mr. Jiti Ogunye, told SUNDAY PUNCH the President had no power to sack a civil servant, stating that the President could “set the ball rolling” by asking the FCSC to begin the process of sacking Maina.
He explained that the commission would be expected to set up a disciplinary committee, which would then query Maina and based on his response, recommend a dismissal.
Ogunye, however, said the FCSC could sack Maina without following the usual procedure if it could be established that his reinstatement was illegal ab initio and therefore null and void.
He said, “Rule 04412, which deals with summary dismissal in case of gross misconduct; allows the FCSC, having followed the disciplinary procedure, allows them to dismiss him.
“In Maina’s case, when in 2013 he absconded from work, he was issued a query which was dated February 15, 2013 and thereafter, when he didn’t respond or show up, he was eventually dismissed in a letter dated March 5, 2013.
“So, he was dismissed properly and having been dismissed properly and then purportedly reinstated with all the institutions that acted now having to answer to the President, who has a right to query them.
“I think in the process of looking into the matter, if it is found that the purported reinstatement did not follow the right procedure and was improper, the status quo would just prevail.
“In other words, you don’t need to sack him but just nullify his purported reinstatement such that his earlier sacking in 2013 would hold.”
Airport security operatives not instructed to arrest Maina
Meanwhile, security operatives of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria have not received instruction to look out for Maina in order to prevent his escape from the country.
It was gathered on Saturday that no formal communication had reached Aviation Security officials to arrest the embattled former pension reforms chairman if sighted at the airports.
This, however, was despite an announcement from the Presidency on Thursday that an Abuja Magistrate’s Court as well as the Interpol had issued fresh warrants for Maina’s arrest.
Also, the Nigeria Immigration Service, on Friday, said it had directed its operatives at border formations and other command posts to look out for Maina, who had yet to be sighted anywhere since Buhari ordered that he be fired.
It said all NIS personnel across the country had also been issued strict directives to arrest Maina on sight.
But when asked if AVSEC officials were on the lookout for Maina at the airports following his disappearance, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, said aviation security had yet to receive such instruction.
According to Yakubu, the AVSEC unit of the airports authority disclosed this to her after she presented the media enquiry to the aviation security department of FAAN.
In a text message responding to SUNDAY PUNCH’s enquiry, Yakubu simply said, “Spoke with the AVSEC. They said no such instruction.”
However, it was learnt that workers at the airports, particularly those at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, were aware of the fact that Maina was on the wanted list of law enforcement agencies.
They stated that although they had yet to receive any formal instruction to apprehend the former pension reforms chairman, they would not hesitate to inform law enforcement agencies if Maina was sighted at the airport.
“Truly, there has not been any formal communication mandating us to look out for him (Maina) or to arrest him, but that does not mean we will fold our arms and watch him escape through this (Abuja) airport if we sight him,” a senior official at the operations department of FAAN, who spoke to one of our correspondents in confidence, said.

IPOB Members Deteriorate Prison Conditions – Uchenwa

IPOB-Crowd
                      IPOB members
The Assistant Comptroller- General, Zone E, Nigeria Prisons Service, Mr.  Alloy Uchenwa, says the presence of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra in various prisons in the zone has compounded the conditions within the prisons.
Uchenwa spoke at the Abia State office of the zone after a meeting with the officers of the command on Thursday.
He said, “It was a miracle how we were able to convey 100 IPOB members to court. The challenging logistics situation in our prisons has been compounded by the detention of 100 Indigenous People of Biafra members within the Zone E custody.”
Uchenwa identified logistics as one of the major challenges of the prisons.
He said a situation where “more than 90 per cent of inmates are awaiting trial” was worrisome, stressing that prison congestion was another challenge confronting the prisons.
He called for the building of more prison cells to ease the challenge of overcrowding, stressing that a situation where cells created for 500 inmates were occupied by 1000 prisoners was unacceptable.

APGA Will Rule Anambra For 50 Years, Says Soludo

                         Prof. Charles Soludo
Tony Okafor
A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof.  Chukwuma Soludo, on Saturday, predicted that the All Progressive Grand Alliance would rule Anambra State for 50 years.
Soludo also predicted economic greatness for the state, adding that the development road map of the incumbent governor, Willie Obiano, must be sustained.
The economist stated this on Saturday at Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, during the inauguration of Obiano’s re-election campaign committee in the area.
He said, “APGA will rule Anambra State for 50 years during which time Anambra would have become one of the best economies in Africa. I can see the indices of modern economic development being put in place by the Obiano government. His agricultural transformation is unique.
“I urge our people to vote for Obiano again so that he can sustain what I’m seeing in this state. After Obiano, I see a continuation of APGA government in this state for up to 50 years because, for the past 11 years, APGA has done marvelously well in this state. I don’t see a change of loyalty soon.”
He urged the people of the state not to be deceived by those  contesting the November 18 poll in the state to pursue vendetta.
In his remarks, a former National Chairman of APGA, Victor Umeh, also urged the people of the area to sustain the APGA leadership in the state.
While expressing optimism that his party would win the November 18 poll in the state, Obiano urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the wish of the people  was protected in the election.
