Nemanja Matic the main man again

Nemanja Matic has instantly become a fan favourite since moving to Old Trafford and it’s not too difficult to see why.
The imposing central midfielder put on another commanding performance against Everton, proving integral in both United’s defensive and attacking play and earning our Man-of-the-Match award.
Former Reds boss Ron Atkinson nominated Matic, David De Gea and Marouane Fellaini, with the Serb collecting 62 per cent of the vote ahead of second-placed De Gea on 31 per cent.
Matic provided the assist for Antonio Valencia to open the scoring and was heavily involved in the build-up to Romelu Lukaku’s goal, the team's third of the afternoon, as his deflected cross was helped on by Jesse Lingard towards the Belgian striker.
If it seemed like Matic was always breaking up Everton's attacks, that's because he was. He gained possession 12 times and had far more touches than anybody else on the field (99). The ex-Chelsea man's total of 83 passes was way higher than the next Red, Ashley Young, on 59, and the leading Toffee in this field (Morgan Schneiderlin on 69), showing his dominance, and he used the ball effectively as well with an accuracy of 90.4 per cent.
Opta's data also shows he covered 11.71km during the game, which is significantly more than anyone else on the pitch. These sort of figures prove just why Matic is making such an immediate impact at his new home and this is the second time he's won our award after being made star man for the win over West Ham on 13 August.

Lawal: Super Eagles, Cameroon Stalemate Fantastic Result‎

Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has described Monday’s 1-1 draw between the Super Eagles and Cameroon in the second leg of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers double-header  in Yaoundé as fantastic, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Eagles took the lead late in the first half through Moses Simon before substitute Vincent Aboubakar equalised for Cameroon in the second half from the penalty spot.
The draw took the Eagles to 10 points with two games left while Cameroon are on three points and are  out of the race to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Reflecting on the hard-fought draw, Lawal hailed the Super Eagles for standing firm despite being under heavy pressure from the hosts.
“It was a fantastic result for the Eagles, four games 10 points,” Lawal who represented Nigeria at France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002 World Cups told Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

“Cameroon were playing for pride, but we scored first and with less than 15 minutes left,  they were all over us. But thank God our boys contained them.
“Three points would have been okay, but at least we did not lose the game. Like I said,  the draw was a fantastic result for us.”
Lawal however stated that the Eagles failed to maintain their first half discipline which saw them struggle in the closing stage of the game.
He said:”We should have maintained our discipline from the first half which would have been much better. In football discipline is very important.
“We shouldn’t have allowed them dictate the play towards the end because it brought pressure on our defence. We should have held on to the ball more. But all the same, it is a job well done by the players.”
The Eagles next game is at home against Zambia on October 7, 2017.

Germany, England, Denmark Win To Enhance World Cup Chances; Romania, Czech Republic Lose

Germany on Monday night moved a step closer to qualifying for the World Cup in Russia with a comprehensive 6-0 win against Norway in the Matchday 8 game of the European zone of the qualifiers in Group C, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler, Timo Werner (brace),  Leon Goretzka and Mario Gomez were the scorers for the World champions at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Stuttgart who now have 24 points and will need to avoid defeats in their last two group matches with heavy scorelines to pick the group’s guaranteed ticket.
Northern Ireland are behind the Germans with 19 points.
In the other Group C matches on Monday night,  Azerbaijan defeated San Marino 5-1 while Northern Ireland claimed all three points against Czech Republic in a 2-0 win.

Denmark traveled to Armenia and were winners after full time with a 4-1 win in their Group E fixture,  Montenegro pipped Romania 1-0, and Poland inspired by Robert Lewandowski who scored a late penalty for Poland thrashed Kazakhstan 3-0 at home.
The duo of Marcus Rashford and Eric Dier cancelled out Stanislav Lobotka’s  early goal for Slovakia as they grabbed the goals for England in a Group F match against the guests at Wembley Stadium which ended 2-1.
The win takes England to 20 points, five more than their Monday’s opponents.
In the other Group F matches,  Scotland saw off Malta 2-0 and Slovania beat Lithuania 4-0.

Ex-Eagle Ndukwe: Complete Striker‎ Ighalo Super Vs Cameroon In Yaounde

Former Super Eagles striker, Raphael Chukwu Ndukwe, has singled out Odion Ighalo for praise in the Super Eagles who played out a 1-1 draw against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Yaounde on Monday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports..
Moses Simon scored the opener for the Super Eagles, but a late penalty goal  converted by substitute, Vincent Aboubacar ensured the Cameroonians earned a share of the spoils.
The draw moves Nigeria move up to ten points from four games with Cameroon in third place with three points from three games. Algeria host Zambia on Tuesday in the other Group B match.
Ndukwe told Completesportsnigeria.com after the game:”He (Ighalo) is a complete striker and he is growing in confidence as the Super Eagles leading marksman. He was the missing link in the Eagles in the game against South Africa.
“His runs drew out the Cameroonian defence line from their position which allowed Moses Simon and Victor Moses exploit the openings during the game.
“He will be crucial to the team’s success in their next game.”
Nigeria host Zambia in their next match on October 7 2017.

Obi satisfies with draw

Nigeria captain Mikel Obi has said that he is eager for the Super Eagles to seal their place at the 2018 World Cup after their 1-1 draw with Cameroon here in Yaounde on Monday night.

The draw took Nigeria’s points tally to 10 from four matches in Group B of African qualifying, six more than second-placed Zambia, who face Algeria on Tuesday.
However, the result confirmed Cameroon’s elimination from the World Cup race.
“The World Cup is a big tournament and I want to attend a second one after my first in 2014,” Mikel said at the post-match press conference.
“A second one for me will be amazing. We have a great young team, but we’re not there yet.”

The Super Eagles scored first through Moses Simon in the first half but had to hold on late on to avoid defeat after Vincent Aboubakar’ s penalty had pulled the hosts level.
“Three points would have been great, but I’m happy with the one point we got. It was a really thought game.”

Kanu Proud Of Eagles For Earning Away Point In Yaounde

Former Nigeria captain, Nwankwo Kanu,  has saluted the Super Eagles for their impressive 1-1 draw against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Monday’s return leg match of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers double header  in Yaoundé, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Super Eagles who massacred the Cameroonians 4-0 in the first leg match in Uyo on Friday, ensured they picked a point in Yaoundé  where the home side held them to a 1-1 draw on Monday .
Reacting via his Twitter handle, the former Arsenal   striker said he was proud of the Coach Gernot Rohr’s team.
“Well done boys, up Super Eagles. We are proud of you all  1-1 and going home with a point,  congrats. Russia here we come. Thanks to our supporters,” the Kanu tweeted shortly after the match.

Nigeria top Group B of the African qualifiers with 10 after Monday’s match. Algeria host Zambia in Algiers on Tuesday in the other Group B matchday 4 game..

ABOVE AVERAGE!: Super Eagles Scorecard Vs Cameroon In Yaounde

DAVID MESHIOYE rates the individual performance of the Super Eagles players in Monday’s second leg of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers double header against Cameroon in Yaounde . The Indomitable Lions who lost the first leg 4-0 in Uyo forced the gallant Nigerian side to 1-1 draw.

IKECHUKWU EZENWA: He did a clean job in the first half of the encounter, dealing with crosses and aerial balls with all confidence. Ezenwa communicated well with Troost and Balogun and that effectively kept the Cameroonians at bay until his inexperience came into play when he gifted The Indomitable Lions a penalty in the 64th minute. Rating 7/10
ELDERSON ECHIEJILE: The Sivasspor and Super Eagles defender has continued to be a shadow of his former self. He struggled to keep the ball throughout the match.  Leon Balogun was effective in covering him up on many  occasions. Elderson failed to link-up well with Moses Simon on the flanks and thereby slowed down Nigeria’s attack from the left-wing. Rating 5/10
LEON BALOGUN: The Mainz 05 strongman was a delight to watch after his initial lethargic start which may be  due to the slight knock he carried into the match from the first leg in Uyo, He combined well with Troost Ekong despite getting into the referee’s book and will continue to keep his place in the team barring any injury. Rating 7/10
WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG: Troost-Ekong once again showed why he would remain Coach Gernot Rohr’s number 1 choice in the heart of Super Eagles defense. The Bursaspor defender cleared his lines well, and as usual, combined well with Leon Balogun to keep Aboubakar at bay.bRating 7/10

SHEHU ABDULAHI: He came under severe pressure after Christian Basagog was introduced by Coach Hugo Broos. He should be commended for his hard work in the heart of Super Eagles defense. Little wonder why Ado Den Haag right full back Tyronne Ebuehi may experience a long spell on the bench as long as Shehu is fit. Rating 6/10
ONAZI OGENYI: Cameroon had a torrid time trying to deal with Onazi who effectively anchored Super Eagles midfield. He did the dirty job and was lucky to bag only yellow card in the first half. His tackles  earned him a yellow card and had to be replaced by Oghenekaro Etebo in the 87th minutes.Rating 6/10
JOHN OBI MIKEL: Mikel did demonstrate why he remains the main heartbeat of Super Eagles with deft touches, accurate passes and more importantly, his leadership role in the team. The Super Eagles skipper mixed hard work with versatility full vision to keep the Camerounian midfielders at bay. He was cheered on by Nigerian and Camerounian fans when he was replaced by Mikel Agu in the 65th minutes.Rating 7/10
WILFRED NDIDI: His presence was felt in the midfield, breaking down dangerous moves from the Lions. The Leicester City defensive midfielder stood as a rock in-front  of back four leaving Mikel Obi to have a free role and link up with the attackers. He showed grit and his wealth of experience helped slow down the pace of the game after Cameroun’s equalizer. Rating 7/10
VICTOR MOSES: The Chelsea strongman once again showed why he would continue to be an integral part of the team. He was a constant threat to the Cameroonian defence and his volley led to goalmouth melee which unsettled the Indomitable Lions defense which saw Moses Simon making hay for Nigeria’s only goal of the match. Rating 7/10
MOSES SIMON: Adjudged as Nigeria’s best player on the pitch following footwork which unsettled Cameroon defenders. He was a thorn in the flesh of Fai Collins and Leuko Tchaha with his dribbling runs on the flanks. He should be commended for his volley which caught goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa napping to give Nigeria the lead in the 30th minute. Rating 8/10
ODION IGHALO: Always a threat to Indomitable Lions defence and almost got his name on the scoresheet when his dribbling runs caught Teikeu Adolph napping, only for his shot to go over the bar. He was replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho in the 79th minutes as Eagles struggled to hold the ball. Rating 7/10
SUBS:
KELECHI IHEANACHO: He came in for Odion Ighalo in the 79th minute as Nigeria struggled to keep the ball. The Leicester City striker barely had any impact on the game as he continued to chase the ball as Nigeria battled to contain late pressure from The Indomitable Lions. Rating 5/10
OGHENEKARO ETEBO: Having dropped to third in the pecking order of Super Eagles’ midfielders, the FC Fiarense player came into the game for Onazi Ogenyi, but ended up chasing balls as Nigeria struggled hard to soak intense pressure from Cameroon. Rating 5/10
MIKEL AGU: The Bursaspor FC of Turkey midfielder did his best but barely anchored Nigeria’s midfield after he replaced a tired Mikel Obi. He was a delight to watch in the first leg, but could not assert his authority in the midfield as pressure mounted on Nigeria. Rating 5/10

Rohr: We’re Happy We Got Our Four Points Target Vs Cameroon

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has admitted that his team faced an improved Indomitable Lions side on Monday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Nigeria scored first here in Yaounde through Moses Simon, but Cameroon equalised with a Vincent Aboubakar penalty and the hosts almost won the game late on.
Rohr, whose team destroyed Cameroon 4-0 in on Friday, praised the Lions for raising their game.
“It was a difficult match, but I expected that from a team that lost 4-0 just days before,” Rohr said during his post-match press conference at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo.

“They wanted revenge and they played well. They brought in three fresh players, while we had the same team that played on Friday. We got tired in the second half.”
Rohr said he was satisfied because he achieved his target against Cameroon.
He added: “Before the two games I wanted four points, so I’m happy we got what we targeted. Tonight’s match was not about spectacle, we just wanted to get a result. If they didn’t have that penalty we’d have got all three points.”

Gallant Super Eagles Held By Cameroon In Yaounde, As AFCON Champions Crash out
The Eagles took the lead in the first half through Moses Simon before Vincent Aboubakar equalised from the penalty spot in the second half.
With the draw, the Eagles maintain their strong hold in Group B on 10 points which means Cameroon, on three points, are out of contention    for the 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket.
The Eagles almost took the lead in seventh minute following a swung in free-kick from Victor Moses which a Cameroon defender almost headed into his own net.
Cameroon responded with a swift attack through the right wing but the effort went inches wide.
In the 20th minute Cameroon won a free-kick in a good area but nothing came out of it.
The Super Eagles eventually took the lead in the 30th minute through Simon who latched on to Odion Ighalo’s assist following a goalmouth scrambble.
Ighalo almost doubled the lead on 32 minutes after good foot-work but his shot went just inches over the bar.
On the stroke of halftime, a dangerous cross from the right was well cleared by William Troost-Ekong for a corner.
Six minutes into the second half Troost-Ekong made a superb clearance away for a corner after a through pass had beaten the Nigerian backline.
In the 59th, minute Cameroon had a chance in front of the Eagles 18 but Cameroon forward hit his shot over the bar.
The Eagles had a chance to double the lead on 63 minutes following good play by Moses on the left, but Ighalo failed to divert the ball into the net.
Moses should have made it 2-0 on 67 minutes after turning the Cameroonian defenders but his curler veered off the bar.
Cameroon equalised in the 75th minute with Aboubakar scoring from the spot after Ezenwa fouled a Cameroonian player inside the box.
With 10 minutes left the Eagles made their second change with Kelechi Iheanacho replacing Ighalo.
On 81 minutes Moses almost curled a free-kick straight into the net but Fabrice Ondoa retreated quickly to palm away for a corner.
Cameroon almost went ahead on 85 minutes but Ezenwa made a brilliant double save before getting injured.
The Eagles had a chance to score the winner from a free-kick which went just over the bar.
Group B other teams Zambia on four points and Algeria will play on Tuesday in Constantine in Algeria.

Cameroon’s World Cup hope over – Coach

Cameroon coach, Hugo Broos
Hugo Broos admitted that Cameroon’s 2018 World Cup qualification hopes are all but over following their 4-0 defeat to Nigeria on Friday in Uyo.
The Super Eagles are top of Group B on nine points after three matches, seven ahead of African champions Cameroon.
They meet again in Yaounde on Monday, with Broos admitting there is nothing but pride at stake.
“There is no pressure anymore on Monday, Nigeria have nine points, we have two points,” Broos said.
“We need to win all three games and Nigeria have to lose all three games, I don’t think that will happen. But there is only an honour to defend, there is no importance to this. I just hope my players will have the same mentality that I have – that they will fight on Monday till the last minute – to beat Nigeria.
“If we had won this game, we would have a chance, but we lost it and I hope everyone will learn from this.”
Goals from Odion Ighalo, John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho sealed the win, with Broos refusing to hold any hopes of a ‘miraculous’ route to Russia.
“Why should we have a chance to the World Cup? We need to win all three games and Nigeria have to lose all three games, I don’t think that will happen,” said the Cameroon boss.
Cameroon are the reigning champions of Africa after their triumph over Egypt in the Nations Cup final in Gabon earlier this year.
The Indomitable Lions have played at seven Fifa World Cups and their best outing was at the 1990 World Cup where they reached the quarterfinals.

WCQ: Zambia coach hopes for Eagles defeat in Yaounde

Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda is hoping the battered Indomitable Lions of Cameroon avenge their 4-0 bashing suffered in the hands of the Super Eagles in their reverse fixture on Monday.
Nyirenda who led his side to a 3-1 win over Algeria on Saturday also described the win as vital in their race to clinch the sole ticket in the African qualifying Group B for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The win at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka meant Zambia end their World Cup jinx against Algeria, thanks to brace from Brian Mwila in the sixth and 32nd minutes and another late strike from Enock Mwepu despite Yacine Brahimi getting on target.
“It was not an easy game for us, it was a big challenge for us but all in all our main was to get the three points which we have achieved so that we stay in the race,” Nyirenda told Lusaka Times after the game on Saturday.
“Nigeria lead the group but I believe Cameroon can beat them on Monday and hopefully we also win our game.”
Zambia who lost 2-1 to Nigeria on matchday 1 of the World Cup qualifying series are currently second in Group B and will be guests of group leaders, the Super Eagles, on October 7.

Government to review LAUTECH tuition fees — Gov. Ajimobi

In a bid to make Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, self-sustaining, government will review tuition fees being paid in the institution, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, has announced.
The governor made the announcement on Saturday in Ibadan, while featuring on a programme tagged “Saturday Special’ aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that LAUTECH is co-owned by both Oyo and Osun state governments.
The institution had in recent times been enmeshed in crisis over the default of the owners to pay subvention and staff salaries.
Ajimobi said his administration had since assumption of office in 2011, paid N22 billion to the institution.
He described the amount being paid as tuition fees in LAUTECH as `abysmal,’ adding that it would be reviewed for the institution to be self-sustaining.
“The default in the payment of subvention and salaries was as a result of economic downturn. When we came on board, we reduced the tuition fees to N65, 000.
“There are secondary schools that charges from N150,000 to N200,000, while some universities charge from N500,000 to two million naira.
“Till date, we have subsidised LAUTECH heavily and we are still giving them.
“Imagine, the institution has 99 accounts and some could not be traced,’’ he said.
The governor said that government had taken steps to resolve the crisis in the university, among which was the auditing of its account to determine its viability to be self-sustaining like other institutions.
He said that staff of the institution had initially refused the auditing firm access but had promised to allow them recently.
Ajimobi said that government had constituted the institution’s governing council which was expected to submit its report after the current holiday.
He promised that the crisis in the university would soon be over and the institution would be given take-off grant for three months.
Commenting on Oyo State Technical University, Ajimobi said that the institution, which would take-off in October, was a specialized institution, adding it was not a university for all.
He said that his administration had evolved several initiatives to reform education in the state, particularly public schools.
He added that the efforts had started to yield the desired fruits.

Barca put off by Coutinho’s 200 million euro price tag, official says

FC Barcelona abandoned their hopes of signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool after the Merseyside club demanded 200 million euros (about 183.10 million pounds) for the Brazil attacking midfielder.
A director at the La Liga side, Albert Soler, said on Saturday the club had no other choice.
The Spanish transfer window shut on Friday night, with FC Barcelona failing to add to their signings of Ousmane Dembele, Nelson Semedo, Gerard Deulofeu and Paulinho.
This is in spite of coach Ernesto Valverde stating publicly he wanted a stronger squad after losing Neymar to Paris St. Germain for a world record fee of 222 million euros.
According to reports in the Spanish media, Barca made a late bid to try and land Angel Di Maria from PSG.
However, their main target remained Coutinho, who Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp repeatedly insisted was not for sale.
“Late last night Liverpool priced the player we wanted at 200 million euros, and we decided we would not do it,” Soler told a news conference.
“It’s a sign of the new era of football, one which isn’t led by clubs. Something has to change. We won’t play along with this new way of understanding football.
“We didn’t want to risk the patrimony of the club, a club of 150,000 members which needs to be managed coherently and responsibly.
“We are in a market where you pay 50 million for a goalkeeper. We will not play along with a market that may not have lost its way entirely, but something has changed.
“This (FC Barcelona) board will not put the club at risk.”
Liverpool did not publicly respond on Saturday.
But a source familiar with the situation said FC Barcelona’s claim was false and that no value was put on Coutinho because he was never for sale.
Liverpool maintain that FC Barcelona were always aware of this.
Soler said Barca’s main problem in trying to acquire new players was that other clubs were trying to get more money out of them following Neymar’s world record sale.
He also said football was changing as now wealthy countries, rather than the clubs themselves, were calling the shots.
PSG, who are owned by Qatar Sports Investments, not only acquired the services of Neymar but also signed France forward Kylian Mbappe on a season-long loan.
The French player is considered the most valuable young player in the world.
“PSG came to us with 222 million (for Neymar) and that meant everyone knew we had money.
“When you go to the market and you have a lot of money, the demands made of you are extortionate. We found ourselves in unbelievable situations,” added Soler.
“What has happened in the market this year takes us to a model of football different to the one we are used to.
“We used to be the ones that lead the market and now countries and investment funds are leading it. Countries have become the main agents in the football world.”

Super Eagles whip African champions Cameroon 4-0

Victor Moses
With just a win in one more game, Nigeria Super Eagles are set to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Nigeria subdued the Indomitable lions of Cameroon at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo 4-0 to extend their lead at the top of Group B by seven points.
Odion Ighalo opened the scoring with a neat finish before John Obi Mikel doubled the lead two minutes before half-time.
Trailing by two goals, Cameroon looked galvanised after the break – but they found themselves three goals down when Victor Moses capped off a well-worked counter attack with a goal.
More misery was piled on the African champions when Kelechi Iheanacho headed home the fourth as the Super Eagles took a giant step towards Russia 2018 qualification.
The Super Eagles are undefeated in 33 World Cup Qualifying matches, with their last defeat coming in June 2004 against Angola.
