Oyo PDP Crisis Deepens As Seyi Makinde’s Faction Knocks Mustapha, Others

Oyo PDP Crisis Deepens As Seyi Makinde's Faction Knocks Mustapha, Others
The crisis in the Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democracy is far from being resolved as a former deputy chief whip at the Nigerian Senate, Senator Hosea Ayoola Agboola has berated the chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha over his comments on Chief Eddy Olafeso.
Alleluyah as the former lawmaker is popularly called, in a press conference, explained that “accusing the zonal chairman (South West), Chief Eddy Olafeso of connivance and passing a vote of no confidence on him is as strange as it is unfair, and appear that they are merely looking for a scape goat.”
Agboola, who was flanked by Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi, former Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Moruf Atilola, Prince Dotun Oyelade and Honourable Dare Adeleke, while addressing some Journalists in Ibadan, the state capital yesterday said the faction could not deny the fact that they are part of the harmonisation exercise, thus lamented why they are playing game with reality.
He disclosed that “majority of party members are satisfied with the decision to fairly harmonise the state exco and give kudos for the painstaking manner it has resolved the issue so that the party can move forward and face the challenges of the coming elections in Oyo state. The issue of harmonised state executive was inherited from The national caretaker executive committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi who, in an Interview Granted Nation Newspaper of Tuesday 27th Of February 2018,  revealed that ” In Oyo State, the party is harmonised since Senator Rashidi Ladoja and Seyi Makinde came in. Of course they have their differences at congress but they too have agreed to harmonise where they have differences at congress”. This statement came at the right time to vindicate us and has affirmed that harmonisation has come to stay.”
Agboola then led other members of the group to express their support for Olafeso, and passed a vote of confidence on him as they described him as a worthy leader in the zone, adding that the statement was meant “to put the record straight and to emphasise the need to embrace peaceful resolution that will bring about all-inclusive and vibrant party that will change the political landscape of Oyo State in 2019 with our victory at the polls.
“With all the emphases at our disposal and the unity of purpose as exhibited by the Abuja declaration, we hereby pass a vote of confidence on the zonal chairman and admonish him to continue with his good work knowing fully well that he equally enjoys the backing of the national leadership. We also rebuke the Kunmi Mustapha faction for openly criticising the national body for performing its legitimate function.‎”‎

APC: How Oyegun, Akin Oke, Others Got One Year Tenure Extension‎

APC: How Oyegun, Akin Oke, Others Get One Year Tenure Extension‎
The National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the extension of the tenure of the John Odigie Oyegun-led National Working Committee (NWC) and state executive committees for one year with effect from June this year.
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello broke the news to reporters yesterday after the  party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Bello said the decision was taken in line with Article 13 of the party, which allows the NEC to exercise the powers of the National Convention.
A source at the meeting said the decision was taken after a voice vote. He added that what was done is simply an expression of the intention to amend the party’s constitution.
Article 30 of the party’s constitution stipulates how such a decision can be established.
Bello said the tenure extension was taken owing to the need to avoid any confusion in the party’s operation ahead of the 2019 general elections and to give the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led reconciliation committee time to carry out an effective job.
The meeting started when President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at the APC headquarters, accompanied by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. It was attended by governors, members of the National Assembly, state APC chairmen and others.
Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara as well as a few governors were absent.
With Bello were National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and the party’s chairmen in Plateau, Rivers, Anambra, Ondo and Nasarawa states.
The party was silent on the conduct of its national convention and the amendment to its constitution.
Bello said: “At the end of the National Executive Council meeting today, a major decision was taken in line with the constitution of our party. We are all aware that the tenure of the current NWC and the executive members of this party – both elected and appointed – comes to an end in June this year.
“Considering the time left for the party to conduct all the congresses and convention and considering that our leader, Senator Tinubu, has been charged with the responsibility of reconciling all aggrieved members of our party, we cannot afford to approach the general elections with more dispute and crises.
“So, relying on Article 13 of our constitution, which empowers the NEC to carry out the function of the convention, the NEC has decided to extend the tenure of the current NWC and other executive committees at various levels for another twelve months, starting from June 30th.
“Let me tell you that this will not stop the convention of the party. But to go into elective Congresses is what we are trying to avoid relying on the constitution of our party. As a matter of fact, Mr. President believes in ensuring that there are Congresses and convention across board.
“However, how would you manage the crisis that will arise thereabout? Let me give you instances, in Ekiti and Osun states, there state congresses were postponed similarly in 2014 ahead of the elections. Just two states to avoid crisis talk more of the whole country. So, that is why this decision was taken.”
On the timeline for the Tinubu committee, he said: “I don’t have the terms of reference that was given to our leader and I want to believe that there is no committee that is set up without timeline. So, I’m not in the position to tell you the timeline given to that committee.
“Also, every member of this committee – whether one man committee or multiple man committee – I want to assure you that every members of APC are cooperating 100 per cent with our leader, Senator Tinubu.”
Those who attended the meeting included: Governors Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), Sani Bello (Niger), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Nasir El Rufai (Kaduna), Abubakar Ibrahim (Bauchi), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos) Samuel Ortom (Benue), Simon Lalong (Plateau) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo).
Others are: Senate Leader Ahmed Lawal, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachukwu, Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun, Deputy Senate Whip Francis Alimikhena, Senator Magnus Abe, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Senator Andy Uba, Senator Sani Yarima, House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, House Whip Ado Dogowa, state chairmen among others.‎

Can Saidi Osupa Earn A Grammy?

Quick question: Can Fuji act Saidi Osupa earn a Grammy?
Somewhat improbable, many respondents may say.
But no matter the responses it draws, the above question remains an intriguing one worthy of introspection especially if we consider the awe in which Nigerians hold everything brewed outside of our shores.
For the Nigerian music creative, the Grammys are a never-disappearing obsession. While every contemporary Nigerian artiste covets the award and the international recognition it brings forth, no artiste of note has been bold enough to express such obsession. It could be argued that many perhaps did, maybe in the safety of their bedrooms.
The enthusiasm that came with the boom of Nigerian pop in the last decade has seen many Nigerians appropriate the role of the Grammys Awards’ Committee by pronouncing their favourite artistes–––from 2face to Wizkid through Asa, all outstanding acts–––winners. Only that such pronouncements have never left the shores of Surulere and Festac Town and Ikeja.
Yet no one, no performing artiste, took the Grammy obsession to the studio with the intent of vomiting same into the microphone. No one–––er, except 9ice.
“Categorically I am the best mentally…” he sings in his 2Face-assisted ‘Street Credibility’, released off his ‘Gongo Aso’ album. On the surface, the pronouncement seemed propelled by a rather curious mixture of hubris and the all-conquering multipurpose Nigerian faith. But a few lines afterwards, it drifts away from uncertainty: “Don’t doubt me I go bring home Grammy,” he says, quite confidently, perhaps for clarity. That was circa 2008, when he was effectively on the A-list.
Today, a decade later, it is unclear if 9ice’s Grammys’ dream is still alive and valid. With a withering career that sees him struggling around the edge of obscurity, 9ice might have forgotten he once made a promise to his now disappearing fans. But then it is equally doubtful if, in the minds of the old fans too, the artiste and his promise haven’t disappeared.
Yet the probability remains that 9ice’s misfortune notwithstanding, the Nigerian artiste still has ‘one corner’ of his eyes on the Grammys. Ditto their fans.
In the Fuji genre, very few people have made public declarations hinting at this sentiment like Saidi Osupa’s. The argument, which indeed is quite difficult to brush aside, is that in contemporary Fuji circle, no one can compete with this musical god for the big prize. (Like his pop counterpart, the artiste goes around with practiced humility, and safely distances himself from the claim of his fans, even if it is an echo of his own thoughts too).
If indeed the Grammys were a recognition of excellence, then Osupa has history on his side. Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade, both two Nigerian-based artistes who have had mentions in the Grammys are excellent artistes in their various genres.
Again, if the awards had soft spot for artistes who have done outstandingly well in the elevation of their indigenous culture through their arts, as it appears with the Best Traditional World Music (sub-)Category created in 2004, Osupa stands out among his contemporaries. The artiste, frankly, is one excellent lyricist and encyclopedic Yoruba folklorist in whose hands the Yoruba culture and language have undergone beautiful elevation.
But there’s a caveat: Osupa may never earn a Grammy–––as grandiose as that ambition sounds in the first place. The Grammys, it appears, favour sound over ‘deep lyrics’, which is Osupa’s major strength. From Kuti to Sunny Ade to Sikiru Adepoju, there is a pattern that speaks to a subtle obsession with sound, apart from the artistes’ own impressive feats in pushing their art beyond their immediate geography.
I have always argued that even though Osupa’s brilliance isn’t debatable in the realm of lyrics–––deep, thoughtful, philosophical lyrics–––he never shows up when the discourse swings toward sound. If there is any Fuji artiste whose experimentation with sound may attract world attention, that artiste is Wasiu Ayinde Marshal. Yet KWAM 1, in spite of his feats and clout and commendable innovations, hasn’t had a mention in the Grammys.
(The Grammys are not devoid of its own politics and It would be appropriate to put this in the context of the visibility many who had their works recognized enjoyed because they plied their trade abroad. From Kevin Olusola through Sade Adu to Seal and ultimately Sikiru Adepoju, the evidences seem incontrovertible. And due to the provincial nature of a number of indigenous Fuji artistes, it is doubtful if their art–––however excellent it appears–––would ever get noticed by a seemingly aloof Grammys Committee).
Now to bring it back home, and perhaps place the discourse on a (more) realistic pedestal, Saidi Osupa has not earned much recognition and awards outside of his immediate Fuji circle, at least not in the manner you’d expect of an artiste with his kind of talent. And this failure, curious as it seems, emanates not from the ‘crime’ that comes with the now clichéd accusation that his brand of Fuji is ‘too deep’, or, as many contemporary Fuji buffs are wont to say, ‘esoteric’. Neither is this a verdict on the quality of his art.
For decades, Osupa’s closest rival, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, has done pretty well with his incursion into the mainstream of pop. He’s featured in pop hits more than ALL Fuji artistes combined; showed up in Celebrity Face2; won the AMEN awards in its heyday; gotten invites to almost all major pop festivals around. Yet when their outputs are placed on the slaughter slab, Osupa is by far a more talented songwriter/lyricist.
But because Alabi Pasuma is a better performer, and ultimately a show-man, he gets the recognition and visibility and, of course, enjoys the attention of the mainstream Nigerian audience while Osupa gets praised for his genius by housewives and artisans and the less lousy ‘thinking’ segment of the Fuji audience.
Curiously, with a Polytechnic certificate obtained long before he picked up the microphone, Osupa remains one of the few acts who came into the industry armed with a degree–––among whom Adewale Ayuba stands out. The default thinking, at least among Nigerians, is that education, nay a (university/Polytechnic) degree, provides the owner with an advantage in any enterprise. In the case of Osupa’s career, the validity of that assertion is shaky.
More important is the evident truth that despite his degree, Osupa lacks the phoney, affectedly dramatic ‘funki-ness’ of Pasuma; the artless gymnastics of an Abass Obesere; the (media-)savvy attitude and rich network of a Wasiu Ayinde (K1 de Ultimate); and the practised, even if theatric, sophistication of an Adewale Ayuba. Now with all of these, coupled with a rather poor, annoyingly provincial PR and media management team, the awards and endorsement deals may not come as they should.
To be sure, Saidi’s Fuji sound is unique, just as his wisdom-laden lyrics are often well scripted; and so they carry with them the baggage of value, of depth, and so of complexity–––and because they are naturally steeped in culture and require some level of thinking to enjoy, they become susceptible to being neglected at best, and scorned at worst, by the average millennial whose only preoccupation is dance and, well, dance.
It is therefore safe to aver that because most corporate communication messages today are directed at the semi-thinking, dance-obsessed, party-loving millennials, the genesis of Osupa’s frustration might not be puzzling.
But in all, there is a small consolation: the road to the party, often, isn’t same as the path that leads to the pantheon. And inside the pantheon of Fuji, there are very few gods. Not a few Fuji buffs, including his worst traducers, would easily agree that Saidi Osupa, has earned a (special) spot for himself amongst these gods.
And this feat, this attainment of immortality, quite interestingly, is the essence of art, the ultimate.‎

Six views on United's victory over Chelsea

ManUtd.com has gathered a selection of post-match quotes from players, managers and fans following Manchester United’s impressive victory over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds came from behind to beat the Blues and move back into second place in the Premier League, as Man-of-the-Match poll winner Romelu Lukaku scored the equaliser and then set up the decisive goal for substitute Jesse Lingard in the 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford.
Mourinho, Lukaku, Chris Smalling and Scott McTominay all spoke to MUTV after the win and we have summarised their key points below.
Jose Mourinho: “I am delighted. I have to admit that they started better than us, but then we found our balance and even more than that – the players found the right spirit and the right attitude. I think we took a bit of time during the first half to adapt to a new position on the pitch – we played a little bit different to normal and for some players, it took some time to find the right timings to press and the right times to have the ball. In the second half, we improved our movement in attack and the full-backs got more confidence to come forward.”
Romelu Lukaku: “We realised that if we played a bit quicker between the lines, we would create space for ourselves and that's what we did. I was happy with the goal. [For the winning goal] I told him [Jesse Lingard] before the game that every time I go down the sides, he needs to make sure he gets in the box because I will find him. He did well with his run and it was a great finish. They [Chelsea] are in good shape and it's not easy but we showed our mental strength and in the second half we just dominated the game. Step by step we have to keep winning because we have a lot of difficult games coming up. We have to be prepared but the mental strength of our team is there and I think we're going to do well.”
Scott McTominay: “It’s obviously a third game in a week for me. I thought we all put a shift in for the team and it was a great win in the end. We came on strong in the second half and we looked the more dominant side and wanted to take the game to Chelsea. I thought we were in total control and it was brilliant to get the three points. When you go behind against any team, it’s not easy to come back – you have to dig deep and remain focused on what the game plan was. I thought we did well to respond so quickly and I thought it was a better performance from us in the second half.”
Chris Smalling: “I think it’s going to be a huge result. I think you could see on our faces at the end how much we wanted that and how much we celebrated that with the fans. In the second half, we upped our game, we had more aggression and the fans were right behind us because we lifted it. I think it shows massive character and I think in the first half we can be honest and say that it wasn’t good enough. We were probably lucky to go in at 1-1, but then in the second half, right from the start of the second half we showed that aggression, we were on the front foot and we really got after them.”
View from the opposition – Chelsea manager Antonio Conte: “We are disappointed with the final result. We had a great chance to get three points against a competitor for a place in the Champions League, but in the end we are talking about another defeat. When you have this type of situation, you have to manage the game better, and you must be able, with experience and maturity, to get three points.”
View from Twitter – @mankar_sahil: "A great win for #MUFC. Lukaku played well and showed his importance. Keep it up!"

Mourinho: We beat a very good team

Jose Mourinho felt his Manchester United side beat “a very good team” as the Reds came from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
After Willian had opened the scoring for the visitors, Romelu Lukaku found the net against his old employers with a fine finish before setting up substitute Jesse Lingard to head in what proved to be the winning goal as United reclaimed second place in the Premier League with a fourth successive home win.
It’s the second season in a row that the Reds have got the better of Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at the Theatre of Dreams, after the impressive 2-0 victory last term.
Here are the key points from the boss in his post-match interview with Sky Sports…
WE BEAT A VERY GOOD TEAM
“I think we beat a fantastic team. For some reason, they were the champions last season. For some reason, they played the way they did against Barcelona. For some reason, they started the game so well as they started here. We beat a very good team and to beat a very good team, you need to be organised but you also need to have a humble spirit where everybody works, everybody fights, everybody tries to follow a game plan. I repeat, we beat a very good team.”
IT WAS A TIGHT GAME
“They started very well, it's as simple as that. When Chelsea hit the posts, I was looking to my players and I was thinking 'what could we do?' or 'who can I blame?' but it was so beautifully played that I had nothing to say. They are a very good team - they have big routines of their football. They have a fantastic dynamic of the way they project the wing-backs. I was trying to find a way for my players to be dangerous in the interior football because through the sides Chelsea are very, very strong, so we found a way to play against them where we didn't concede much. I think we had a good control of Eden [Hazard], Willian, of course, is an amazing player and in that action [his goal] he killed us, but we took progression of the game, we had more and more control of the game without creating lots of chances because we didn't but they also didn't. That's the way I was expecting the game to be when I spoke with you before the game - a tight game.”
MCTOMINAY IS DOING FANTASTIC JOBS FOR US
“I think he's a fantastic player - a player that is what I call the modern midfield player, which in the end is a bit of what the top midfield players of the past were. They can do everything. The only thing he is not doing yet is scoring goals, which he can. But because I'm giving him different jobs, he's not yet free to do that. We are starting from the basics and the basics he's doing wonderfully well. I think he can also score goals - he has that talent. In pre-season, we understood that. But we are adapting him to his multi-functionality and he's doing fantastic jobs for us, like he did in Sevilla against Ever Banega and today against Eden, so I'm really happy with the player.”
A GREAT TEAM EFFORT
“I don't like to individualise - I think [Nemanja] Matic was phenomenal, I think [Paul] Pogba played a fantastic game in our midfield. I could speak about my central defenders too and the guys in attack - the mission Alexis had, to be the third attacking player but at the same time the fourth midfield player to try to cover the area in front of Scott. I think everyone made a big effort. Could the result have been a draw? Yes it could. But I think in the second half we were more confident, we felt more confident with the defensive base and I think if somebody deserved a victory it was us. But, if you were to say a draw, I would accept that. The important thing for us is that we beat a fantastic team.”

Lukaku voted Man of the Match

Romelu Lukaku has been voted Manchester United’s Man of the Match by fans on Twitter after inspiring the Reds to victory over his former club Chelsea.
The no.9 scored for the fourth successive home game with a fine finish to level matters after Willian’s opener for the visitors, before his pinpoint delivery was headed home by Jesse Lingard with 15 minutes remaining to secure three crucial points for United.
The Belgian claimed an overwhelming 73 per cent of the final vote with another ex-Chelsea player, midfielder Nemanja Matic, finishing second in the poll (17 per cent) while Scott McTominay (13 per cent) was the third nominee.
It’s the second successive weekend in which Lukaku has claimed the star-man award, after capping an influential display with a brace against Huddersfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup.
Speaking to MUTV immediately after the Chelsea game, the striker insisted the win wasn’t any more significant for him because it was against his old employers but he was certainly pleased to contribute to a key result for United.
“No, I’m just happy with the win for the team,” he said. “It was an important win for us I think. It was important for us to win and to get back into second position in the league so I'm just happy with the win.”
Lukaku now has 22 goals in 40 games across all competitions in what has been an impressive debut season so far for the 24-year-old, but he is keen to do more in order to help the Reds win silverware.
On his scoring ratio to date, he added: “It's not bad, but you can always improve. I want to do better for the team. At the end of the day, I'm at Manchester United and I want to win trophies. That's the most important thing.”

Manchester United 2 Chelsea 1

Premier League | Old Trafford | Attendance: 75,060 | Scorers: Willian 32; Lukaku 39, Lingard 75.

Jesse Lingard’s penchant for the big occasion brilliantly tipped the balance for Manchester United against title-holders Chelsea as the Reds reclaimed second place in the Premier League table.

United's no.14 headed in the 75th-minute winner at Old Trafford, connecting with a cross by Romelu Lukaku who had earlier cancelled out the Blues' opener by Willian to square the match at 1-1 for half-time. It was a masterstroke by Jose Mourinho to bring on Lingard, the scorer of FA Cup and EFL Cup final goals for the club, and the susbtitute had the scent for glory again only 12 minutes after coming on.

The Reds were in danger of allowing Antonio Conte’s side to draw level in the table and tighten up the battle for the coveted top four berths. But instead the stubborn Reds refused to fold after going a goal down and ultimately restored the longstanding state of play in the league.

Both sides had returned to Champions League football in midweek following the Euro winter break with United playing in Spain against Sevilla 24 hours after Chelsea had drawn with the might of Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

Conte’s team looked initially like they’d had the longer preparation time and less travelling as they dominated possession and it was a struggle for the Reds to get into the match.

There was an early scare after just four minutes when Alvaro Morata hit David de Gea’s crossbar with a volley from Alonso’s cross. De Gea, who was the sensational hero on Wednesday night in United’s 0-0 draw in the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, was then needed to tip over Eden Hazard’s effort as the Belgian followed up Alvaro’s miss.

It continued to be a slog but just as the Reds finally managed to claw a way back into the match, the Premier League champions ruthlessly hit United the break. A 31st-minute attack by the hosts was broken up and Willian stormed from the edge of his own area to take the ball forward. The Brazilian swiftly fed Hazard before racing on for the return and sliding his right-footed shot past De Gea.

United were finding it hard to have an impact on the game in the penalty area but Mourinho's men stuck it out and got the reward. There were only crumbs to be had but Romelu Lukaku snaffled his opportunity up.

The Belgian forward was dogged in his bid to keep a 39th-minute chance alive. His hold-up play eventually brought Nemanja Matic into the action and the Serbian slipped the ball to Alexis. The Chilean's pass to Anthony Martial was forwarded to Lukaku and the striker finished off the move with a calm effort against his old club.

It was the 100th Old Trafford goal under the management of Jose Mourinho and Lukaku’s fourth strike in February. It couldn’t have been more timely and raised the spirits after a difficult first 45 minutes.

Despite the lift of that equaliser the pattern in the second half remained much the same with Chelsea looking the more dangerous side. The Reds needed to contain the Hazard and Willian threat but the latter went on a punishing 49th-minute run that ended with Morata’s shot being blocked.

There was a heart in the mouth moment when De Gea spilled a Danny Drinkwater long-range drive but United cleared the loose ball. After 63 minutes Mourinho made his first substitution. It hadn’t been a productive afternoon for Martial and he was taken off for Lingard.

The Reds started to look brighter and goalscorer Lukaku almost spectacularly put United in front after 67 minutes. He acrobatically volleyed a left-footed effort at the Stretford End that needed a glove from Thibaut Courtois to tip over to foil the Belgian.

Mourinho’s first substitution paid off and Lukaku was again influential in the moment that put the Reds in front after 75 minutes. He floated in a perfect clipped cross over the head of defender Andreas Christensen to meet the run of Lingard who’d ghosted in to steer his header home.

It was a superb comeback from the Reds that will be a huge boost going forward in the “amazing” month ahead predicted by Mourinho.

TALKING POINTS

McTominay earns his spurs
Scott McTominay was given the Ander Herrera role of keeping tabs on Chelsea’s mercurial playmaker Eden Hazard. No easy task for even the most experienced of man markers. The Belgian was lively but 21-year-old McTominay repaid the faith shown in him by Jose Mourinho and never allowed Hazard to rule the roost and the fact Conte took his no.10 off the pitch after 73 minutes said it all.

Lukaku is an all-round striker
He scores the goals but United’s £75m hitman is also a perfect foil up front. The powerhouse bosses defenders and holds the ball up superbly. Having scored the Reds' equaliser he proved he is no mean provider either as it was his service that added the assist to his match stats for Lingard’s goal. It was in contrast to Chelsea’s own big summer purchase Alvaro Morata who appeared to test the patience of the travelling support as he failed to make an impression.

United hold off Chelsea’s top-four challenge
After earlier weekend wins for Spurs and Liverpool, the battle for Champions League places had become even more intense. Had Chelsea won at Old Trafford they’d have drawn level on 56 points with United and the heat would have been on. But the Reds' victory meant second place was taken back from Liverpool and the Blues are now at arm's length with a six-point cushion.

Jose: The next few weeks will be amazing

Jose Mourinho is looking forward to what the next few weeks at Old Trafford hold in story for Manchester United, with a series of huge games coming to the Theatre of Dreams.
In this short space of time, the Reds will play two massive Premier League matches rivals against Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as the UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg against Sevilla and the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton and Hove Albion.
“I think the next few weeks at Old Trafford will be amazing,” Jose told MUTV’s Helen Evans. “Two big matches against two direct rivals in the Premier League, two knockout matches that, if things go well, can leave us in the quarter-final of the Champions League and the semi-final of the FA Cup.
“Sometimes we have periods with three, four consecutive away matches but this time we have four matches at home, with Crystal Palace away in between, but four big matches at Old Trafford.”
The boss also admitted to MUTV that he cannot believe how quickly the season is going and how cup competition success can congest the match schedule. United’s current schedule contains 12 matches, including the final 10 Premier League matches, and that total could potentially rise to 19.
“Time flies,” Mourinho laughed at the Aon Training Complex on Friday. “It feels like two days ago that we were in Los Angeles for pre-season and now we’re almost in March. March, April and May can be really busy and going far in the FA Cup creates you problems. We now play Brighton when we were supposed to play West Ham and we don’t know when we’ll play West Ham. If we play the semi-final of the FA Cup, I don’t know when that will be so it can be really busy and complicated.”

Why United have the edge over Chelsea

It’s second v fourth on Sunday as Manchester United host Chelsea in what remains one of the biggest fixtures in the Premier League calendar.
The Reds produced arguably our finest performance of 2016/17 to defeat the champions-elect 2-0 at Old Trafford in April, through goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera, who will unfortunately be sidelined this weekend.
And while only three points separate the sides right now, premierleague.com statistics suggest Jose Mourinho’s men have the edge over Antonio Conte’s Blues…
THE HEADLINE STATS
At the most basic level we have more points (56 to 53), scored more goals (51 to 49) and conceded fewer (19 to 23) than Chelsea. At home we've netted 29 goals and conceded five, while away Chelsea have scored 25 and conceded 13. And while the west London outfit once boasted a strong record at Old Trafford, they have in fact only one won of their last seven league games here, and scored only one goal in their last four visits.
DE GEA’S THE TOP DOG
"He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and it’s not possible for a team to be successful without a fantastic goalkeeper," Jose told MUTV on Friday. We’re all of the opinion that David De Gea is the best stopper in the league, if not the world – his display against Sevilla in midweek underlined that. But how does he compare to Thibaut Courtois, another pretender to that crown? Well, the Spaniard has kept a league-high 15 clean sheets to Courtois’ 13 and made 87 saves to the Belgian’s 52. Our no.1 has proved he can turn defence into attack, too, producing 202 accurate long balls to Courtois’ 136.
SMALLING AND JONES AT THE BACK?
Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have more than played their part when chosen as United’s centre-back pairing in the league this season. Looking at the key defensive statistics, Chris has won 69 aerial battles and Phil 53, comfortably more than Chelsea’s Gary Cahill (50) and Antonio Rudiger (47). Meanwhile, Jones has made an impressive 121 clearances and Smalling 111, with Chelsea’s Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on 73 and 72 respectively.
MIDFIELD MUSCLE
The battle between former Blues midfielder Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante could be a key factor in deciding the outcome on Sunday, and most of the stats are in our man’s favour. Matic has made 51 interceptions to Kante’s 49, made 1,901 passes (Kante’s on 1,541) and dwarfs his vaunted rival when it comes to aerial battles won (47 to 14). The Serbian is also ahead on clearances (46 to 20) and duels won (147 to 133).
RED ROM OUTGUNS MORATA
Romelu Lukaku is United’s leading marksman this season with 21 goals in all competitions (12 in the league) and Mourinho insisted on Friday he has no worries about him in the big games. "Twenty-one goals is not bad at all and I don't analyse the players' performances the same way you do," he told reporters. "I have other points of analysis and I'm happy with Romelu's performances, even when he doesn't score goals." Chelsea’s focal point in attack, Alvaro Morata, has 10 league goals to his name this term, but none so far in 2018. And Red Rom’s in the ascendency in other areas, too: shots (71 to 61), shots on target (33 to 27), passes (571 to 424), big chances created (5 to 3) and crosses (25 to 16). That illustrates Jose’s point pretty well!

Preview: Manchester United v Chelsea

Setting the scene… After three successive away games, the Reds are back at Old Trafford this weekend, for only the second time this month, for the visit of reigning Premier League champions Chelsea. Both teams come into the game on the back of draws against Spanish opponents in midweek in the Champions League and Jose Mourinho’s men will be looking to return to winning ways in the league after a 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle in our last outing. Sunday’s encounter will undoubtedly have a big impact on the race for a top-four finish, with the Reds looking to increase the gap over Chelsea to six points with a victory.
How can I watch it? Sunday’s big game kicks off at 14:05 GMT and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK. Subscribers to MUTV on Sky or Virgin Media, the club's MUTV app or online at MUTV.com will be able to watch build-up from 12:00 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full at midnight. You can keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and by following the official Twitter account @ManUtd.
What’s the team news? The Reds were without Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Sevilla but were boosted by the return of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford as substitutes on Wednesday night. However, the boss confirmed on Friday that Ander Herrera will be out for "a few weeks" after the midfielder sustained a recurrence of a muscle injury early on in midweek. Eric Bailly could also make his 50th appearance for the club and his first start since our last game against Chelsea on 5 November. For Chelsea, defender David Luiz and midfield duo Ross Barkley and Tiemoue Bakayoko are out of Sunday's game but striker Alvaro Morata is available again.
How are Chelsea doing? After an indifferent start to the season with 13 points from their first eight games, Chelsea and boss Antonio Conte have been under pressure again in recent weeks, following consecutive league defeats against Bournemouth and Watford at the start of the month. However, their last two outings might have galvanised their season after a comfortable 4-0 Emirates FA Cup fifth-round win against Hull City and a well-deserved 1-1 draw against Barcelona on Tuesday. Sitting one point clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and a point below third-placed Liverpool, Conte’s side will be keen to maintain the pressure on the teams around them in a tough week, with a trip to leaders Manchester City to come next.
What happened last time we played Chelsea? The previous clash between the sides was back in early November and saw the Reds’ long run without a win at Stamford Bridge continue. After showing some promise in an even first half, United fell to a 1-0 defeat with Morata heading home a Cesar Azpilicueta cross in the 55th minute.
What’s our overall record against Chelsea like? History shows the Reds are leading the head-to-head record comfortably, with 73 wins to Chelsea’s 52 from 178 meetings. The sides have drawn 53 times before and, prior to last season’s impressive victory, the previous three league meetings at Old Trafford had ended in draws.
One to watch: Having scored three goals in Chelsea’s last two games, Willian is in fine form heading into his 10th match against United. He put in an exceptional performance on Tuesday night, using his pace and strength against Barcelona. The Brazilian forward hit the woodwork twice in the first half before scoring with a brilliant low finish against the five-time European champions and the Reds defence will have to be alert to ensure he doesn’t score against United for the first time on Sunday.
Mourinho’s record v Chelsea: The boss has had mixed results when coming up against his former club. During his Treble-winning season at Inter Milan in 2010, he beat the Blues in both legs of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16-tie. During his time as United manager, the Blues have won the sides’ three meetings at Stamford Bridge but the Reds prevailed 2-0 in the only encounter at Old Trafford last season.
Did you know? The Reds will hope to maintain their excellent defensive record of late, which has seen us keep nine clean sheets in the last 11 games in all competitions. United have also kept a total of 23 clean sheets overall this season, which is three more than any other Premier League team.
Who’s the referee? Martin Atkinson will take charge of his fourth United game of the season, having officiated our 4-0 home win against West Ham on the opening weekend, the goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield in October and, most recently, the 2-2 draw against Burnley on Boxing Day. The Bradford-based whistler will be assisted by Lee Betts and Simon Bennett, with Andre Marriner acting as the fourth official.
Rivals watch: As Arsenal and Manchester City prepare to battle it out in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley shortly after United play on Sunday, there’s an otherwise complete Premier League programme this weekend. Here’s the full fixture list…

Injury news from Jose: United v Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Ander Herrera is definitely unavailable for Manchester United’s highly anticipated Premier League match against rivals Chelsea on Sunday.
The Spain international picked up an injury in the early stages of the first half during Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 first leg at Sevilla’s Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
The severity of Herrera’s problem is yet to be determined and, as such, the manager does not know long the central midfielder will be sidelined, but he will not feature at Old Trafford this weekend.
"Ander is out," Mourinho said in his press conference. "I don't know the final diagnosis but I know he'll be out for a few weeks. I don't know how many is a few - two, three, four, five, six weeks - I don't know, but a few weeks, for sure. Coming back from injury - nobody else." No other players will return from injury against Chelsea, according to Jose, which means Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are both still unfit for action, as well as Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
THE LATEST ON PAUL POGBA
The France international was named on the bench against Sevilla, before he replaced the injured Herrera after just 14 minutes. Mourinho was asked about the player during the press conference on Friday.
"I think he responded in a very professional way, both times he was on the bench," Jose told reporters at the Aon Training Complex. "He was on the bench against Huddersfield in the Premier League and he responded in a professional way. He was on the bench in Seville and he did the same." On the same subject, the boss also said: "You saw the game against Sevilla - I think it's always more difficult to come from the bench than to start. A player when he's starting the game has a different kind of preparation for it and to come on even without warming up, in minute 15, or minute 20, and to get into the pace of the game is not easy.
"I think he had a very positive game for us and sometimes, details are details, but sometimes players on the bench take five minutes to be ready to play. They don't have shinpads, they don't have the strapping, they don't have a shirt. He took 10 seconds to be ready to come to the pitch, which showed the professionalism that he was ready to play and help the team, which he did."

Preview: Newcastle v Manchester United

Setting the scene… After beating Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Old Trafford last time out, the Reds will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League when returning to the road this weekend to face Newcastle United at St James' Park. It's been an emotional week off the pitch for the club, who commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster on Tuesday, but Jose Mourinho's men will now switch focus to matters on the field. The Reds will be confident of securing another three points against the lowly Magpies, who are embroiled in the intriguing battle to avoid relegation.
How can I watch it? Sunday's clash kicks off at 14:15 GMT and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK. Subscribers to MUTV on Sky or Virgin Media, the club's MUTV app or online at MUTV.com will be able to watch build-up from 12:15 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full at midnight. You can keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and by following the official Twitter account @ManUtd.
What's the team news? It'll be interesting to see who gets the nod in central midfield after Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay both performed well against Huddersfield, with McTominay playing the full 90 minutes and Pogba appearing from the bench. Club captain Michael Carrick could make his first league outing of the season against his hometown team but fellow midfielder Marouane Fellaini will be sidelined, as the Belgian continues his recovery following an operation on his left knee. Mourinho confirmed in Friday's press conference that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has returned to training this week and defenders Eric Bailly and Daley Blind are the only absentees for Sunday's game. Meanwhile, Joselu could return for Newcastle after the Spanish striker missed the trip to Crystal Palace through illness, while Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and on-loan Leicester forward Islam Slimani could make their debuts after arriving at the club on transfer deadline day last month. Boss Rafael Benitez said on Friday that Jesus Gamez is "getting better" as he recovers from an ankle injury, but Sunday's game will come too soon for the defender.
How are Newcastle doing? After starting 2018 with back-to-back successes against Stoke City (1-0 away in the league) and Luton Town (3-1 at home in the FA Cup), the Magpies have gone five games without a win in all competitions and have drawn the last two by a 1-1 scoreline at home to Burnley and, last weekend, away at Crystal Palace. Benitez's side made a bright start to the season following promotion from the Championship but their form has dramatically fallen over the last three months. They haven't won at home in the league since 21 October, have kept just two clean sheets in their last 17 matches and sit 16th in the table – just a point above the bottom three – with 12 games remaining.
What happened last time? When the Reds welcomed Newcastle to the Theatre of Dreams back in November, there was excitement in the air as Paul Pogba returned to the starting line-up after injury and the Frenchman stole the show with a Man-of-the-Match display. Following Dwight Gayle's surprise opener for the visitors early on, the Reds responded well as goals from Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Pogba and top scorer Romelu Lukaku secured a convincing 4-1 victory.
What's our overall record against Newcastle like? History shows that the Reds edge the head-to-head record with 83 wins from the clubs' 164 meetings – including seven of the last 11. The last four clashes at St James' Park have yielded 10 away points from a possible 12, with the January 2016 contest on Tyneside ending in a thrilling 3-3 draw. That result and others suggest we can expect some goals on Sunday, with the last 10 encounters between the teams producing 34 in total.
One to watch: He may have only joined Newcastle last month but Kenedy has already shown in his first two games for the club that he can be a key player for the rest of the season. Since arriving on loan from Chelsea, the Brazilian has created both of the Magpies' goals against Burnley and Crystal Palace and won a penalty against the Clarets, which was taken by Joselu but saved by opposition keeper Nick Pope. Kenedy's pace, power and direct running has brought a new dimension to the Newcastle attack and has impressed boss Rafael Benitez, who said of the 22-year-old: "We knew about his quality and, at the same time, we know he is a young player. He has to carry on with the same attitude and same confidence."
Mourinho v Benitez… The two managers have locked horns in big games down the years when they went head to head at Chelsea and Liverpool respectively, but November's reverse fixture at Old Trafford was the first occasion the pair faced each other in opposing dugouts in the Premier League for a decade since a 1-1 draw at Anfield in August 2007. Mourinho has crossed paths with Benitez 17 times before and has the upper hand with eight wins and five draws.
Did you know? Romelu Lukaku boasts a formidable record against Newcastle, scoring six goals and registering four assists in nine previous Premier League appearances against the Magpies in his career. The Belgian striker – who is still the Reds' top scorer this season with 19 goals in all competitions – is also in good form of late, having been involved in six goals (four goals and two assists) in his last six games.

Who's the referee? Craig Pawson will take charge of his fourth Reds match of the season on Sunday, after handling both league games against Southampton and the win over Newcastle in the reverse fixture. The FIFA whistler from Sheffield will be assisted by Lee Betts and Richard West, while Paul Tierney has been appointed as the fourth official.
